Post-traumatic stress disorder is common after a tragic event, such as the Transocean rig explosion.

Just because there may not be physical signs that you were onboard the Deepwater Horizon rig when it exploded, such as burns or broken bones, it doesn't mean you have walked away uninjured. Workers who were involved in the Gulf of Mexico rig explosion are at risk of developing a serious anxiety condition known as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). While this condition may be hard to understand, it is very real and can impact just about every area of your life.

There is a reason why war veterans and crime victims have nightmares and troubling flashbacks. It is because they have developed PTSD symptoms. If you were working on the rig at the time of the deadly blast, you experienced a horrific event that claimed the lives of your fellow crewmembers. You need to be aware of the signs of post-traumatic stress disorder, so that you know when to get help.

Symptoms of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder
You can develop PSTD if you have experienced or witnessed an event that causes intense fear, helplessness or horror, such as in the case of the Transocean rig explosion. PTSD symptoms include the following:

  • Flashbacks that last minutes or even days
  • Nightmares associated with the event
  • Not talking about the event
  • Trouble maintaining close relationships
  • Irritability or anger
  • Sleep difficulties
  • Memory problems
  • Feeling hopeless about the future
  • Being easily frightened

The above PTSD signs are just a sample, as there are many more symptoms associated with this anxiety disorder.

Post-traumatic Stress Disorder Shouldn't Be Ignored
It's easy to downplay the seriousness of post-traumatic stress disorder, because it is a condition that is commonly misunderstood. PTSD can be serious and can significantly impact your life, not to mention your family. You need to understand that post-traumatic stress disorder cases are not uncommon following a serious accident, such as the rig explosion. It is crucial that you get the appropriate help and professional care.

What Deepwater Horizon Rig Workers Need to Know
Many Deepwater Horizon rig workers are not sure what steps to take. You may be one of them. The companies involved may be pressuring you to sign papers and you may be told by a maritime lawyer that you have to take action fast. At the Law Offices of Vujasinovic & Beckcom P.L.L.C., we are telling all of the rig workers and their family members that there is no urgency. While they may be able to recover compensation under federal maritime law, they have time and should focus on getting better.

Maritime attorney Brian Beckcom has written a helpful report for rig workers and their families, which answers many of the questions that are currently being asked. Be sure to order your free copy of the report, Answers to the Most Common Questions About the Transocean Rig Explosion.
