The Transocean rig explosion caused countless back, neck, shoulder, knee and head injuries.

There were only minutes to react after the Transocean rig explosion. Workers rushed to lifeboats and boarded as quickly as possible. Some workers didn't get there in time and had to jump into the water 80 feet below, resulting in an impact similar to that of a car hitting a brick wall at 55 mph. It doesn't take a lot of imagination to picture the extent of injuries that could be caused by such a fall.

While the majority of the crewmembers were able to quickly get to safety, many sustained serious injuries along the way. Survivors recounted tales of workers walking around the dark rig with gaping head wounds and others with serious leg injuries. If you were onboard the Deepwater Horizon, you may have been one of these injured workers.

The types of injuries reported following the Gulf of Mexico rig explosion have ranged from burns to brain injuries. However, orthopedic injuries appeared to be the most common following the deadly blast.

Common Injuries Suffered by Deepwater Horizon Rig Workers
Orthopedic injuries include the following:

  • Bone fractures can take several weeks to heal and frequently require surgery to repair.
  • A fractured skull is one of the most serious orthopedic injuries and is often accompanied by a concussion or brain injury.
  • Knee injuries are inevitable in situations, such as the rig explosion. Crewmembers reported that the surfaces were slick and the rig was dark, causing many workers to fall as they tried to evacuate.
  • Back pain could indicate that there is a more serious injury, such as a spinal cord injury or herniated disc.
  • Neck pain can be caused by a sprain, which affects the ligaments, or from a strain that damages the muscle tissues.
  • A shoulder injury could be the result of a dislocation or separation. Surgery is sometimes necessary for this kind of orthopedic injury.

What Deepwater Horizon Rig Workers Should Know
If you were on the Deepwater Horizon, you have probably been contacted by one of the maritime companies asking you to sign papers. You may not have known what to do and you are not alone. The weeks following the Transocean rig explosion were confusing for most of the crewmembers, as they were pressured by the companies and even told by attorneys that they had to take action right away.

The most important thing you could have done after the rig accident was to focus on your family and your health. You experienced a traumatic event that more than likely caused you to suffer a serious injury. It is important that you pursue the appropriate medical treatment for your injury and take your time in signing papers or hiring a lawyer.
